Coastal tamarisk hedge cut back to show hurdle fencing, Tankerton

The problem

A long tamarisk hedge in a coastal garden at Tankerton had grown out in front of woven hurdle fencing, hiding it from view. Salt wind makes tamarisk grow fast and loose, and by autumn it had lost its line.

Canterbury Hedges covers a lot of chalk and clay gardens inland, but coastal planting like this is a different job.

What we did

We cut level along the full length with a long-reach trimmer, keeping the line even and the hedge dense enough to shelter the lawn. The front face was taken back to reveal the fencing, and the top was brought down to one consistent height.

Because tamarisk does not respond well to cuts into old wood, we stayed within the current growth. Clippings were bagged and the ground cleared.

The result

The fencing is visible again, the top is level and the hedge is ready for winter. A single light cut each year will keep it in shape.

Looking after it

Canterbury Hedges works across a real mix of ground: chalk on the downs, clay in the Stour valley and light sandy soils nearer the coast. Each behaves differently, and so do the hedges planted in them. A hedge on the coast gets more wind, more salt and faster, looser growth. We adjust the cut to suit, which is the difference between a hedge that looks good for a week and one that stays good for a year. If you are not sure what you have, send us a photo and we will tell you.
